Te Uku School Junior Discovery Term Three Newsletter

Dear Parents and Caregivers

We are well underway with another fun and busy term in the Junior Discovery.  A warm welcome to all the new children and their families who have joined us this term.

Term 3 is ten weeks long and the last day of school is Friday 29 September.

What’s on this term in the Junior Discovery?

Bernard Butler, Catherine Lynagh, Lisa Wheeler and Scott Johnson will be teaching every day.  On Mondays and Wednesdays, Carol Carlson will be teaching in the Junior Discovery, and on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, Alison Hewett is also part of the teaching team.  We all start each day together and then move off into specific learning groups and activities.  Whaea Lisa’s Circle Group start their day with her.

Para Kore – Our big theme this term is about reducing, reusing, recycling and composting the rubbish we have at school. We are exploring this through our science, writing, and arts programmes.

Arts rotation – On Monday afternoons we are continuing to provide an arts focus with the children participating in music, dance, drama and visual arts learning activities. We will make available an opportunity for families to see our learning later in the term.

Football tournament – We have a large number of children going to the Junior Interschool Football tournament on Friday 25 August. Thank you to the parents/caregivers who have offered transport and help for this event.

Horse Paddock Fridays – We all spend Friday afternoons in the Horse Paddock and children will need shoes/gumboots and suitable clothes for being outside in a bush setting.

Wet activities clothing– As we plan to get out and about around the school each day, it is important that your child has appropriate clothing and footwear. It is a good idea to have a change of clothes in your child’s bag if they are getting muddy during the day and a small wet cloth that they can wipe the mud off themselves.

Resources - If you have any magazines, ice cream containers, small boxes and newspapers that you do not need we would appreciate them for some learning activities we have planned.

Dragon Maths – Chapters on Fractions, Multiplication and Division are a good focus for this term to reinforce the teaching programme.

Parent/Teacher Interviews - If you were unable to attend an interview, please make contact with your child’s teacher to make a time for this.

There will be other events that are school wide, and the weekly school newsletter will provide you with more information about these closer to the time.

Please always feel free to come and see either of us if you have any questions.  You can email us if that is easier.

Kind regards

Bernard, Scott, Lisa, Catherine, Alison and Carol

Learning the Times Tables

This term there will be a bit focus on learning and being able to recall the times tables.

Year 3 children need to be learning the 2 x , 5 x and 10 x

Year 4 children need to be learning the 2 x, 3 x, 4 x, 5 x, and 10 x

Please come and ask us if you would like some ideas for how these can be learnt at home.

Rote learning these is still all good to be doing! There are some catchy songs on the internet for this. Using the tables in everyday practical situations is great as well. e.g. I have two rows of eggs. In each row there are 3 eggs. How many eggs do I have altogether.

Term 4 Newsletter

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Welcome to the start of what is set to be another fun and busy term in Discovery 2.  We hope you and your family have had a lovely break.

Term 4 is ten weeks long and the last day of school is Friday 16 December.

What’s on this term in Discovery 2?

In our first four to five weeks we will be continuing with the Kia kaha programme started in term 3. This has a focus on developing children’s understanding of the different types of bullying that they might encounter and providing strategies they can use if they are being bullied or they see bullying happening. For this learning the Year 3 and Year 4 children are split into their specific year levels to ensure they receive learning appropriate to their age. This programme was developed by the New Zealand Police and has been part of schools Health and Physical Education programmes across the country.

Teachers – Both Bernard Butler and Scott Johnson will be teaching the Year 3 and 4 students.  On some Mondays and every Wednesday, Carol Carlson will also be teaching these children. We will start each day together and then break off at different times during the day into specific learning groups.

Swimming – We will be swimming towards the end of this term.  We will let you know sooner to the time as to when this will start.

Tabloids – On Friday 28 October we will hold the annual inter school junior Tabloids at Te Uku school. Look out for more information coming soon about this fun day.

Athletics – We will start practicing a range of athletics skills over the next few weeks which will lead up to our school athletics day. Some children will be selected to attend the interschool athletics later in the term.

Footwear – As we plan to get out and about around the school each day, it is important that your child has something to put on their feet.  The hard surfaces get very hot by the afternoons and the field sometimes has prickles!

Hats – Term 4 all children are required to wear the school hat. If you need to purchase a hat, they can be bought from the office.

There will be other events that are school wide, and the weekly school newsletter will provide you with more information about these closer to the time.

Please feel free to come and see either of us if you have any questions.  You can email us if that is easier.

Kind regards

Bernard, Scott and Carol
